Topology classifies geometric objects by asking whether they can be smoothly transformed into each other without rupturing or breaking them. Thus, a coffee mug with one handle is topologically equivalent to a torus, and a simple bowl to a sphere. A rather surprising example is shown here: the smooth transformation of two chained links into two unchained links.
